Vladimir Shukhov’s TV Tower, Moscow

Posted by & filed under Life, Outside.

Moscow’s huge TV Tower, designed by avant-garde architect Vladimir Shukhov, was originally built between 1920 and 1922 to transmit TV signals throughout the Soviet Union. The building is so influential the it has been cited by Norman Foster as the inspiration for The Gherkin, but is now in danger of being lost forever. In a dilapidated state, the Russian government seems reluctant to restore the tower to its Modernist glory – despite offers by architects to work for a next-to-nothing fee on the project. So, before we lose it forever, here are a few images that capture its scale. (Via Phaidon)
